Miguel Pastenes wins the 2008 Texas Tree Climbing Championship
In Fort Worth on April 4th and 5th we saw what it
takes to be a Texas Tree Climbing Champion. Looks like a
prerequisite is to be on one of the tree crews at
Arborilogical Services. We have won again this year
thanks to our own Miguel Pastenes, Climber
Extraordinaire. We will represent the ISA Texas Chapter
at the International Tree Climbing Championship in St.
Louis in July. Alongside this year's competition will be
an advanced climbing techniques workshop and information
on the ISA Tree Worker Certification.
The five TTCC events were:
Work climb: Contestants climb to five
stations in a tree, performing a different task at each
station. Aerial Rescue:
Contestants reach and safely lower an injured climber
(actually a life-sized mannequin)
Throwline: Tests
contestants' agility to accurately place lines about 50
feet up in a tree. Belayed
speed climb: Contestants ascend a
predetermined route from ground to about 50 feet.
Secured foot lock:
Measures climber's ability to perform 40-foot vertical ascent using
double-climbing line.
To celebrate our win, we had a cake made with
Lisa Pennington's outstanding artwork (which just
happened to have a picture of Miguel from his 2006 win) and served it with
coffee and punch at our victory celebration. Steve
Houser, company president, gave a brief speech and
handed-out a competition bonus for each competitor. The
company always provides a bonus to all that compete
which increases in size according to their standing in
each event and overall.
Looks like Miguel gets a good check this time around!
