Winner of a National Arbor Day Foundation Project Award “1996”.

Recognized by the Dallas Park Department and Scottish Rite Hospital for outstanding efforts to clean Reverchon Park.

Recognized by the International Society of Arboriculture’s Texas Chapter (1998), by granting the only “Tree Preservation Award”, to date that the organization has awarded.

Due to the past support and sponsorship of the Texas Tree Climbing Competitions (put on by the ISAT), all Texas tree climbers are now competing for the ISAT’s “Steve Houser Award of Excellence” or the “Houser Cup”.  A hansom trophy cup that is presented to the State Champion upon winning the State Championship.  This is the only time that the ISAT has recognized anyone in this manner.

Personal Biography

Born at Baylor Hospital, Dallas TX.

Lived in Mesquite and road a bus to Zion Lutheran Church school (on Lovers Lane in Dallas) for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Moved to Richardson and attended public schools for sixth grade through high school.

Attended Mountain View College in association with Braniff Airlines and earned an associate degree in Applied Arts.

Holds licenses with the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) for airframe and power plant mechanic.

Was told on the first day of mechanic training that “only four people have ever attended the school who correctly answered 100% of the F.A.A. mechanics, written exam.”  Became the 5th person to ace the F.A.A. written exam and was on the Deans honor roll for every semester of college.

Went to college during weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. then at Brookhaven Country Club (maintaining trees) until late afternoon.  Went to Pilot Ground School at night (two nights a week) and flew on the weekends (plus side tree work).  Passed the F.A.A.’s written pilot exam and only lacked 3-hours of night time flying to receive a pilots license when medical condition arose that prevented the granting of a license.
